The term hypnosis comes from a Greek root "hypnos" meaning "sleep." Hypnosis is a trance or "daydreaming" like state. However, hypnosis is not a state of sleeping as most people imagine. Unlike sleep, one’s senses become more heightened in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation. This deep relaxation allows your unconscious mind to communicate with your conscious mind. In other words you can access inner wisdom and information easily in this highly relaxed state called hypnosis. Ever seen children watching TV? It becomes really hard to get their attention sometimes. They are so engrossed in what they are watching; they are in trance.
You may well be experiencing trance everyday. Have you ever driven from point A to point B while not consciously knowing how you got there? You just got in your car and drove. This state of autopilot is a trance; call this your driving trance.
It’s apparent then that we all experience trance states fairly regularly, isn’t it? It could be while driving, cooking, watching TV or even talking to a collegue at work; they are talking but you're not really listening. The state of "being somewhere else" is a type of trance. Hypnosis has a degree of mystery and sometimes even suspicion because it's used by the entertainment industry. Stage hypnosis is entertainment. It is not hypnotherapy.
